How is Obesity Calculated?

Obesity calculations are based on the classifications determined by the World Health Organization. The Body Mass Index calculation methods are generally preferred for this calculation method.We will try to give you a better understanding of the formula by explaining it through an example. It is calculated by taking the square of the formula of Body Mass Index = Weight (Kg) / Height. For example, the calculation of a person who is 1.80 cm tall and weighs 100 kilograms is as follows. First we will need to square the height. It is 1.8 x 1.8 = 3.24. Then, by dividing the body weight of 100 kilograms by the square of the height, the result is 100/3.24 = 30.8.

According to the reference ranges determined by the World Health Organization, if the Body Mass Index calculated for a person is between 18.5 and 24.99, he is in the “normal” class. If the person has a Body Mass Index over 25, he is in the overweight class. If there is a Body Mass Index over 30, obesity is considered, and a Body Mass Index over 40 puts him in the morbid obesity category. A BMI below 18.5 puts the incumbent in the underweight category.
