LEPTIN RESISTANCE AND OBESITY

blank

Most people; thinks that the way to escape from obesity, which is a global problem, is only through calorie restriction and willpower, but in fact, there are various reasons for weight gain.

Leptin, also known as the satiety hormone, is the hormone that signals that the calories taken during nutrition are sufficient, that is, it is the leptin hormone that makes us say ‘yes, this is enough’ while eating.

Further studies show that obesity may also be caused by a hormone called leptin. Leptin regulates food intake by binding to central nervous system receptors and modulating the activity of neurons in appetite control centers in the brain.

In most of the obese patients, the restrictive effect of leptin on calorie intake is reduced, and since the person cannot experience fullness while eating, the energy he receives increases, which causes obesity. This functional deterioration in the leptin hormone is called LEPTIN RESISTANCE. Although a difference is made between energy intake and energy expenditure in most adults, body weight may not change as expected because complex physiological systems balance energy intake and expenditure. Energy balance is regulated by peripheral signals (hormones) integrated in brain centers, including the hypothalamus, brainstem, and reward centers, which in turn regulate nutrition and energy expenditure.
